Our Why

Inwood Youth Performing Arts was founded on a simple belief: every child deserves access to the arts and the opportunity to explore their creativity, build confidence, and experience the transformative power of the performing arts.

Located in Inwood, we aim to provide accessible, high-quality theatre, dance, and performing arts programming for students of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. Through classes, camps, workshops, and performances, we create a welcoming environment where young people can learn, grow, and express themselves while developing skills that extend far beyond the stage.

As one of Manhattan's most vibrant and diverse neighborhoods, Inwood is rich in culture, history, and community. Yet we noticed an absence of accessible performing arts programs for children. Many local families face limited access to affordable performing arts opportunities close to home. Inwood Youth Performing Arts was created to help bridge that gap by bringing meaningful arts experiences directly to the children and families of Northern Manhattan.

Our programs are designed to nurture creativity, teamwork, empathy, and confidence. Whether a child dreams of performing on Broadway or simply wants a safe space to explore their imagination, there is a place for them here.

Sarah Waxman is a performer and arts educator with 15 years of experience creating educational and theatrical experiences for young people. Throughout her career, she has developed and managed arts programming, directed and choreographed youth productions, and cultivated learning environments that encourage creativity and growth. Sarah is passionate about expanding access to the arts to students of all backgrounds and believes that creating equitable access to the arts is vital to the art form and society.

Brenna Rose Hughes is an actor, dancer, singer, and teaching artist. She began her dance training at age three and studied at The Cincinnati Ballet’s Otto M. Budig Academy, The Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts, and as a youth company member with The Portland Ballet. She also trained and performed with Oregon Children’s Theatre before earning her BFA in Acting with a Minor in Musical Theatre from Marymount Manhattan College. Brenna has taught with Urban Stages, Broadway Bound Kids, and voluntarily with Groove With Me, and continues to bring arts programming to communities across New York City. She can often be found performing, teaching, or exploring Inwood Hill Park with her dog, Banjo.
